Who We Are

Go Store It Self Storage is a privately held, entrepreneurial self-storage development, acquisition, property, and asset management company based in Charlotte, NC. Since our inception in 2013, our focus has been on investments in major and secondary markets across the United States that offer significant cash flow, revenue growth, and long-term capital appreciation opportunities.

Led by a field of investment professionals with more than 75 years of combined experience and a team of more than 100 employees nationwide, GSI takes exceptional customer service to new heights, introduces unique concepts to the market, and maximizes profitability for investors—all within a fun and inspiring team environment.

Meet Our Team

Ryan Hanks – Founder, CEO

Mr. Hanks founded Go Store It in 2013 and is responsible for leading Go Store It. Mr. Hanks has more than 19 years of real estate experience acquiring and developing apartment communities and storage facilities and has been involved in more than $5 billion in commercial real estate transactions.

Mr. Hanks started Madison Capital Group, LLC in 2009 with the purpose of creating an opportunistic real estate venture that would seek opportunistic returns in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast region. Prior to that, Mr. Hanks was with Apartment Realty Advisors, the nation’s second-largest apartment brokerage firm specializing in the disposition of multifamily communities on behalf of private and institutional investors. Prior to Joining Apartment Realty Advisors, Mr. Hanks served as Vice President of Development and Acquisitions for a public company that specialized in the ownership, management, and development of multifamily communities across the country, and he was responsible for sourcing investment and development opportunities in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.

Mr. Hanks is a member of the Charlotte Apartment Association (CAA), Urban Land Institute (ULI), National Multi-Housing Council (NMHC), Self Storage Association (SSA). Mr. Hanks attended Liberty University to study Business Administration.

Ben Carr – President, Chief Investment Officer

Mr. Carr oversees the operational and investment activity for Go Store It. He has enjoyed a career in self-storage with diverse experience including President of Miami City Self Storage; Chief Investment Officer at Life Storage, a privately held self-storage company; and Vice President of Investments and Controller for CubeSmart (NYSE: CUBE), a publicly traded real estate investment trust (REIT). Prior to his time in self-storage, Mr. Carr held various roles within PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), serving public and private real estate clients.

Mr. Carr has previously been a Trustee of Tyler Arboretum and has been heavily involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Mr. Carr has a bachelor’s degree from Penn State as well as an MBA from Villanova, and he resides in Charlotte, NC.

Joe Teague – Chief Operating Officer

Joe Teague has 20 years of experience in commercial real estate and related tax planning and business analysis. Joe has expertise in complicated finance structures in addition to like-kind exchanges. As an attorney and business consultant, he has managed cumulative business transactions for companies in excess of $1 billion. Since leaving public accounting in 1998, Joe has worked at several premier law firms in the Charlotte, NC area, working with real estate developers, high net worth family offices, and private equity firms.

He is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. Joe is a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne University, where he played varsity baseball, as well as a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Law. He has been a CPA for 25 years and a licensed attorney for 20 years. When not at work, Joe enjoys coaching Little League baseball and softball and spending time with his four children.

Sumit Anand – Chief Accounting Officer

Sumit has more than 10 years of public accounting experience. Prior to joining Go Store It, he was a Senior Tax Manager with a large regional CPA firm. At the firm, he was a member of the Real Estate & Pass-Through Tax Groups. Sumit worked with retail, residential, and industrial real estate development clients to provide tax planning and strategies related to tax-deferred real estate exchanges, inbound investment in U.S. real estate, fund structure, and related tax planning to minimize the tax impact of various capital events. Sumit began his career having spent three years working for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) helping small businesses and self-employed taxpayers comply with federal tax law.

Sumit graduated from the University of Memphis with a B.S. in Finance and from Belmont University with a master’s degree in Accountancy. He is a member of the Tennessee Association of Certified Public Accountants as well as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Steve Makepeace – Senior Director of Operations

Steve Makepeace is a 20-year veteran in the storage industry. After graduating from Kent State University with a degree in Hospitality Business Management, he relocated to South Carolina and spent 10 years in the food & beverage industry overseeing restaurant groups throughout the Southeast U.S. He started in the storage industry in 1999, when he was recruited by Public Storage to manage multiple locations in South Carolina and North Carolina. After a successful tenure learning the business and honing his skills in multi-unit management, Steve moved on to work with a handful of other storage leaders. He was successful in helping these companies grow their brands by focusing his efforts on existing store expansion, new store acquisition, and site development.

Steve joined the Go Store It Management team in January of 2017 as Director of Operations. He oversees the operation of our new and innovative storage platform. He and his team have combined their cumulative years of experience with state-of-the-art technology and bold new strategies to create a fresh approach to storage. Steve and his family live in beautiful Charleston, SC.

Marlene Arteta – Investor Relations

Marlene Arteta heads up Investor Relations and Communications at Go Store It. With 25+ years of experience in the financial services arena, her previous experience includes C-suite roles with both broker-dealers and sponsors. She has held various marketing roles during her career at firms such as the Chicago Board Options Exchange, Stein Roe Mutual Funds, and several alternative investment firms. She was also the first full-time employee of the Tenant-In-Common Association (currently known as ADISA) helping develop and promote the current industry best practices. Most recently, she was Chief Content Officer for boutique broker-dealer Emerson Equity LLC.

Marlene received her master’s degree in Financial Services Marketing from DePaul University and her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She also earned her FINRA Series 22 and 63 licenses. She is a member of the University of Illinois at Chicago Athletics Advisory Council, whose mission is to provide the perspective, counsel, and advocacy for the Athletics Department’s strategic direction.

Evan Stephens – Director, Asset Management

Evan serves as the head of Asset Management for Go Store It. Evan helps analyze acquisitions, developments, and expansion opportunities. Evan previously worked with Jefferies Investment Banking in the Real Estate, Gaming, and Lodging group where he assisted in the evaluation and execution of strategic alternatives for public and private real estate companies—including mergers and acquisitions and capital markets issuance.

Up to this point in his career, Evan has worked on more than $2 billion of real estate transactions, including more than $1 billion in the storage sector. Evan graduated from Wake Forest University with an M.S. in Accountancy and a B.S. in Finance.

Adam Lentz – West Coast Partner

Adam oversees Go Store It’s development activity on the West Coast. Throughout his career, Adam has amassed extensive real estate experience through the acquisition and development of more than 28,000 self-storage units and 5,000 multifamily and for-sale condominium units, with total development costs exceeding $2.25 billion.

Adam most recently served as the Managing Director for Leon Capital, where he led the company’s self-storage platform—consisting of acquisitions, development, construction, financing, and asset management of more than 2.25 million square feet of self-storage properties.

Prior to joining Leon Capital Group, Adam was the Regional Director for Johnson Development Associates, where he founded the West Coast office of Johnson’s national self-storage development platform.

Adam earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from UCLA.
